Abstract

The article focuses on a mentorship-based initiative aimed at implementing laparoscopic liver surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa, specifically at Mombasa General Hospital in Kenya. This initiative, launched by the non-governmental organization Cirugía Solidaria and the Virgen de la Arrixaca Clinic in Spain, addresses the challenges of limited infrastructure and training in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by combining surgical care with local team training. During a campaign in March 2025, several advanced surgeries were performed with the active participation of local medical professionals, who received hands-on mentorship throughout the procedures. The project aims to establish Mombasa General Hospital as a regional referral center for hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, emphasizing the importance of adapting advanced surgical techniques to local resources and fostering local ownership and professional empowerment.
