Abstract

This article focuses on the strategic conversion of an existing outpatient retail pharmacy into a closed-door mail-order pharmacy within a health system, detailing the planning, implementation, and outcomes of the project conducted from July 2022 to February 2023. The conversion involved three phases: pre-conversion workflow standardization and staffing ratio development, implementation and training during the transition, and post-conversion evaluation including marketing and staff engagement. Results showed a 20% increase in total prescription volume, a 10% rise in monthly revenue, and improvements in staff engagement metrics, demonstrating enhanced operational efficiency and capacity without additional personnel. The project highlights the importance of standardized operating procedures, automation, flexible workflows, and ongoing staff involvement in successfully expanding mail-order pharmacy services.
