Abstract

The article focuses on how organizational leaders can effectively navigate employee activism by thoughtfully deciding when and how to respond to employees’ concerns. It presents a taxonomy of six common leadership responses to activism, ranging from ignoring to actively stimulating it, and highlights the negative consequences of dismissive approaches. The authors introduce the ACT IF framework, which guides leaders to consider Authority, Concern, Theory of change, Identity, and Field factors before acting. They also emphasize the importance of pausing to reflect on organizational values, biases, and stakeholder perspectives to foster genuine dialogue and align activist responses with corporate identity and strategy.
