Abstract

This article investigates how digital remediation of corporeally mediated tattoos on a China-based blog facilitates personal expression and sociocultural meaning negotiation amid persistent stigmatization of tattoos in Chinese society. Analyzing 305 blog postings from the Tattoo Exchange Circle (TEC) quantitatively, the study focuses on photographic techniques—distance, angle, gaze, and modality—used in capturing tattoos to visually manipulate viewer perceptions and foster engagement. Findings reveal that most tattoos depicted are on typically concealed body parts, reflecting social stigma, yet digital presentation on the blog enhances their communicative value and potential for cultural rebellion and empowerment. The study highlights how digital remediation acts as repurposing, enabling tattoo wearers to circumvent social barriers and suggests further research into viewer reception and the formation of virtual tattoo communities in China.
