Abstract

This article examines the strategic intent and challenges primary care providers face in implementing nutrition programs within healthcare settings. Based on semi-structured interviews with 16 primary care providers and staff, three main themes emerged: patients present with complex health beliefs and barriers related to social determinants of health; providers deliver nutrition services constrained by organizational factors such as limited time, space, and billing issues; and while providers recognize community resources as important cues to action, they are uncertain about how to effectively partner with community organizations. The study highlights that effective nutrition interventions in primary care are limited without strong community-based partnerships and calls for further research on enhancing these collaborations to improve patient nutrition outcomes.
