Abstract

This article focuses on measuring the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides radium-226 (^226Ra), thorium-232 (^232Th), and potassium-40 (^40K) in soil samples around the Royal Uranium Site in Sikar district, Rajasthan, India, using high purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectroscopy. The study found that the average concentrations of ^226Ra (47.01 Bq/kg), ^232Th (86.56 Bq/kg), and ^40K (1194.42 Bq/kg) exceed global averages, likely due to local uranium deposits and the use of potassium-based fertilizers. The calculated radium equivalent activity (Raeq) averaged 261.59 Bq/kg, below the recommended safety limit of 370 Bq/kg, while the average annual effective dose (0.75 mSv) was higher than the global average but below the 1 mSv/year recommended limit. External and internal hazard indices mostly remained below unity, indicating no significant radiological health risk to the local population from soil radioactivity in the study area.
