Ballistic Pendulum Measurement and Prediction of Blast Reflected Impulse From Spherical Charges at Close Standoff Distances.

Abstract

A ballistic pendulum was used to measure the total reflected blast impulse from bare spherical C‐4 charges with charge masses ranging from 0.113 to 0.68 kg at a standoff distance of 0.127 m. A high‐speed camera was used to record the maximum horizontal movement of the pendulum bob and the associated blast impulse was calculated. The measured results were compared to total impulse predictions from ConWep and to numerical simulations using an empirical blast model and both axisymmetric and 3D finite element blast models. Live fire test results showed good consistency in measured blast impulse between repetitions, while the 3D finite element blast model was necessary to achieve a strong correlation of predicted impulse with measured values.
