Abstract
This article focuses on measuring indoor concentrations of radon-222 (Rn-222) and thoron (Rn-220), as well as outdoor gamma radiation, in dwellings located in a tin mining area of Barkin Ladi, Jos Plateau, Nigeria. Using passive radon-thoron cup dosemeters and a hand-held survey meter, the study found that thoron concentrations (41–267 Bq m⁻³) were consistently higher than radon concentrations (7–53 Bq m⁻³) in all sampled homes, with no correlation between the two gases, indicating the need for independent measurement of each. The mean total annual effective dose from indoor radon and thoron was 2.84 ± 1.57 mSv, with thoron contributing 50–95% of this dose, while the mean outdoor gamma radiation dose was 1.14 ± 0.21 mSv per year, exceeding global averages. The findings highlight the significance of thoron in radiation dose assessments in mining areas and suggest that thoron should not be neglected in radiation protection considerations.
