Abstract

This article focuses on the precise measurement of electron affinities (EAs) and the electronic structures of the negative ions of scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) using the slow-electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) method combined with a cold ion trap. The EA values are determined to be 0.179378(22) eV for Sc and 0.31129(22) eV for Y, with the ground states identified as 3d4s²4p ¹D₂ for Sc⁻ and 4d5s²5p ¹D₂ for Y⁻. Several excited states of Sc⁻ (³D₁) and Y⁻ (³D₁, ³D₂, ³D₃, ³F₂, and ³F₃) are observed and their energy levels accurately measured, including the first experimental observation of the ³F states of Y⁻. These high-precision results provide benchmark data for understanding transition element properties and support theoretical developments in strongly correlated atomic systems.
