Evaluation of combustion system for organically bound tritium analysis using dried fish samples.

Abstract

The article focuses on the development and validation of a semi-automatic combustion system designed for the analysis of organically bound tritium (OBT) in environmental samples. This system enables safe, reproducible combustion of large sample quantities—up to about 40 grams—by employing a programmed temperature increase that prevents sudden ignition, with adjustments made according to sample type and gas flow rates. Validation tests using fish standard samples demonstrated that the combustion water recovery rate exceeded 80%, and OBT concentration results obtained via this system closely matched those from mass spectrometry, a recognized accurate method. The study concludes that this semi-automatic combustion system facilitates efficient and reliable OBT analysis, potentially advancing research on tritium dynamics in the environment.
