Kinetics investigation of alumina ceramics corrosion in nitric acid.

Abstract

This article focuses on the corrosion behavior of cold isostatically pressed (CIP) high-purity alumina (Al₂O₃) ceramics in nitric acid (HNO₃) solutions under varying concentrations (0.5, 1.25, and 2.0 mol dm⁻³) and temperatures (25°C, 40°C, and 55°C) over 10 days. The study found that alumina exhibits good corrosion resistance, with corrosion kinetics following a near-parabolic law; corrosion rates increased with temperature but decreased as nitric acid concentration rose. Ion elution from alumina occurred in the order Fe³⁺ < Mg²⁺ < Na⁺ < Al³⁺ < Ca²⁺, reflecting impurity solubility and grain boundary segregation effects. Activation energy for corrosion decreased with increasing acid concentration, indicating a chemical reaction-controlled process. These findings provide insights into alumina's stability in acidic environments relevant to its industrial applications.
