Radiological risk assessment of phosphate fertilizer application on farmlands in Ondo State, Nigeria.

Abstract
This study evaluates the radiological risks linked to phosphate fertilizer use on farmlands in Ondo State, Nigeria, by measuring concentrations of natural radionuclides uranium-238 (^238U), thorium-232 (^232Th), and potassium-40 (^40K) in soil samples from ten agricultural towns using gamma-ray spectrometry. Results show that ^40K has the highest activity concentration due to the potassium-rich nature of phosphate fertilizers, with spatial variability influenced by local geology and fertilizer application. Despite some elevated radionuclide levels in certain areas, mean activity concentrations, hazard indices, absorbed dose rates, annual effective dose equivalents, and excess lifetime cancer risk estimates remain below global averages and recommended safety limits, indicating low radiological risk to the population. The study recommends educating farmers on the potential effects of radionuclides and reducing inorganic fertilizer use to promote environmentally safer agricultural practices.
