Reprocessing of natural and artificial UV aged acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene.

Abstract
This article investigates the effects of natural ageing (outdoor weathering) and artificial ultraviolet (UV) ageing on the mechanical, rheological, and morphological properties of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymer. Virgin ABS samples were exposed to 12 months of natural outdoor ageing in Gebze, Turkey, and 15 days of accelerated UV ageing, after which aged samples were ground and blended with virgin ABS at varying ratios before reprocessing and testing. Results showed that both natural and UV ageing reduced tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural strength, deflection, and impact strength, while increasing the melt flow index (MFI), indicating polymer degradation. Incorporation of virgin ABS into aged material partially restored mechanical properties, though impact strength recovery was limited after UV ageing and reprocessing. Morphological analysis via scanning electron microscopy revealed no significant changes in fractured surface morphology due to ageing or reprocessing.
