Abstract
This article examines a teaching experiment in two political economy courses where students wrote letters to the editor for a major Asian newspaper, the South China Morning Post, achieving a 40 percent publication rate. The assignment aimed to develop students' skills in constructing concise, single-argument texts, critically engaging with media, and applying political economy analysis to current global issues, while also addressing student privacy concerns through an opt-in submission model. Student feedback indicated that combining this short-form public writing with longer research essays enhanced their learning, broadened their global outlook, and improved critical media literacy, though some struggled to link letters directly to course content. The article concludes by proposing assignment modifications and highlights advice from newspaper editors and experienced letter writers to support student success in public writing.
