Abstract

The article critically examines Philip Meyer’s 2004 prediction in *The Vanishing Newspaper* that print newspapers would become obsolete by 2043, analyzing global and regional trends in circulation, revenue, and digital innovation through the lens of Disruptive Innovation Theory. It finds that while print newspaper circulation and advertising revenue are sharply declining in highly digitalized regions such as the United States and Western Europe—supporting Meyer’s forecast—print media remains relevant in developing countries like Nigeria and India due to limited internet access, digital literacy challenges, and trust in print journalism. Newspapers worldwide are adapting by adopting hybrid business models, including digital subscriptions, paywalls, multimedia content, AI-driven personalization, and strategic partnerships with technology firms, which are reshaping journalism rather than causing its extinction. The study concludes that print newspapers are unlikely to vanish entirely by 2043 but will continue evolving as specialized, credibility-focused outlets within a predominantly digital media landscape.
