Abstract
Donald Trump's lawyer, Emil Bove, has suggested that the $150,000 deal between tabloid publisher American Media Inc. (AMI) and former Playboy model Karen McDougal was not an attempt to influence the 2016 election, but rather an effort to help McDougal restart her career. Bove's questioning of former AMI CEO David Pecker during the ongoing criminal trial sought to undermine claims by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg that the payment was part of a criminal conspiracy to conceal Trump's conduct with women. Pecker also testified that McDougal did not want to publish a story about her alleged affair with Trump. However, the questioning did not contradict the prosecution's allegation that Pecker, Trump, and former attorney Michael Cohen had a deal to suppress negative stories about Trump during his campaign. Pecker also admitted that he believed McDougal's account of the affair was true and that it would be embarrassing for Trump if published. The trial is expected to last up to eight weeks.
