Abstract

This article discusses the repatriation and digitization of newsreels capturing pivotal moments in Irish history, including Michael Collins's famous speech in 1922 and the proclamation of the Republic of Ireland in 1949. The Irish Film Institute worked with British agencies to preserve and share these visual documents, providing a new level of clarity and detail. The Anglo-Irish Treaty offered Ireland more internal independence than it had in centuries, while the Republic of Ireland Act officially declared Ireland as a republic with executive authority.
