Abstract
This article focuses on making inclusive behaviors habitual within teams by identifying and addressing common patterns that hinder inclusion, termed Detractor Patterns, and replacing them with corresponding positive behaviors called Amplifier Patterns. Drawing on extensive coaching experience, the authors emphasize that inclusion is a behavioral habit rather than mere diversity, and that teams hold responsibility for practicing and sustaining inclusive interactions. Five key Detractor Patterns discussed include Courtesy Code-switching, Ignoring, Gaslighting, Tokenism, and Boxing Out, each paired with an Amplifier Pattern such as Letting the Person's Words Be, Closed-Loop Exchanges, Empathetic Mirroring, Mapping Opportunities to Motivators, and Open Bodies. The article advocates for teams to intentionally pause, recognize exclusionary behaviors, and practice inclusive alternatives collectively to embed lasting change and improve team cohesion and performance.
