Abstract
This article examines a lived experience-led crime prevention project called Reformed, based in Toxteth, Liverpool, which is led by formerly imprisoned community practitioners. Using participatory action research and photovoice methods, the study highlights how Reformed's approach—centered on safety, love, community, hope, and broader social advocacy—addresses the complex needs of marginalized individuals affected by criminalization and social exclusion. The project emphasizes inclusive, relationship-based support informed by lived experience, aiming to disrupt oppressive structures and foster locally led, hope-filled service provision. The authors suggest that partnerships between community practitioners and social workers could enhance such efforts and provide reflective questions for practitioners to incorporate lived experience leadership in their work.
