Abstract

This article examines how media coverage in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland framed the propaganda videos of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) between 2014 and 2017. It finds that news outlets often adopted and transmitted ISIL's own framing, thereby amplifying the terrorist organization's communication strategy. Over time, however, media reporting evolved to become more balanced and, in some instances, challenged ISIL's frames. The study highlights the significant role of media framing in shaping public perception of ISIL's propaganda.
