Abstract

This article examines how personal trauma influences the professional role of community journalists through a textual analysis of the Netflix dark comedy *After Life* (2019–22), which follows Tony Johnson, a small-town journalist grieving his wife's death. It explores the interplay between Tony's personal grief, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and his journalistic duties within the close-knit community of Tambury, England, highlighting how his intertwined personal and professional identities both challenge and foster resilience. The study finds that while Tony's grief sometimes impairs his professional objectivity, his role as a community journalist also provides social support and a sense of purpose that contribute to his recovery. The article contributes to scholarship on community journalism, resilience theory, and the representation of journalists in popular culture, emphasizing the complex relationship between journalists' mental health and their engagement with the communities they serve.
