Abstract
The article focuses on the controversy surrounding updated Pentagon press rules announced by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, which restrict journalists from obtaining unauthorized material and entering certain Pentagon areas without official accompaniment. Major news organizations, including The Associated Press, The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, HuffPost, and Breaking Defense, have refused to sign the new rules, arguing that they infringe on First Amendment rights and impose unprecedented limitations on press access. The Pentagon Press Association stated that these changes threaten historically held access and convey intimidation within the Department of Defense. Secretary Hegseth has insisted on compliance, warning that non-signing journalists must surrender press credentials and clear their workspaces.
