Abstract
This article examines the entrepreneurial and citizen journalism potentials of 9Mobile’s SMS-based news service, MoreNews, within Nigeria’s expanding mobile telecommunications landscape. Using content analysis and covert non-participant observation of SMS news derived from four major national newspapers, the study finds that while 9Mobile’s news SMS consistently reflects prominent front-page stories and is easily accessible once received, the service suffers from inconsistent and delayed delivery, limited content diversity, and lack of comprehensive news aggregation. The research highlights media policy concerns such as absence of appeals or explanations for delivery issues and calls for improved copyright checks and professional standards. Despite these shortcomings, the study concludes that 9Mobile’s SMS news service holds significant promise for fostering media entrepreneurship and enhancing citizen journalism through affordable, data-independent news dissemination and potential interactive platforms.
