Abstract

The article examines the rapid rise and global influence of China’s short dramas—also known as micro-dramas—which have grown from a niche format in 2018 to a multi-billion-dollar industry serving hundreds of millions of users by 2024. These tech-native platforms integrate storytelling, AI-driven experimentation, and modular monetization into a unified system that continuously tests and optimizes content based on real-time audience data, targeting fragmented “ignored time” in daily life. Chinese companies separate a stable global “core engine” of production and monetization workflows from localized “experience layers” to adapt content culturally and linguistically for diverse markets. The article highlights both the innovative business model’s potential for other industries and the challenges it faces, including regulatory scrutiny, creative homogenization, cultural sensitivities, and intellectual property risks.
