Abstract
The article focuses on the decline of the U.S. newspaper industry and efforts by the Knight Foundation to revitalize local journalism. Over the past two decades, the industry has experienced significant job losses comparable to those in cassette tape and DVD manufacturing, resulting in the disappearance of local newsrooms and creating news deserts for approximately 55 million Americans. Under the leadership of Maribel Pérez Wadsworth, the foundation has increased funding for initiatives such as Press Forward, nonpartisan election coverage, and the American Journalism Project to support nonprofit local news. Wadsworth emphasizes the importance of local journalism as a vital element for community connection and engagement.
