Abstract
BCE Inc., Canada's largest telecommunications firm, has announced plans to cut 9% of jobs this year, resulting in approximately 4,800 job losses. The cuts will primarily affect the company's broadcasting unit, leading to layoffs and the cancellation of news shows on its television stations. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his frustration with the decision, stating that it is disheartening at a time when the government is trying to support local journalism. BCE attributed the cuts to federal policies, including a regulatory decision that will require the company to open up its broadband networks to smaller competitors at fixed rates. The government has attempted to provide financial support to Canadian news outlets through legislation, but some tech companies have resisted. Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge expressed concern over media consolidation and warned of upcoming regulatory changes in the broadcasting sector. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is currently examining whether BCE is complying with its license obligations. [Extracted from the article]
