Abstract

This study compares the coverage of the 2023–2024 Israel-Gaza war by two international news agencies: The Associated Press (AP), representing Western journalism, and Qatar News Agency (QNA), reflecting an Arab state perspective. Analyzing headlines from the first four months of the conflict, the research found that AP's coverage leaned more toward war journalism—focusing on elites, immediate events, and partisanship—while QNA exhibited more peace journalism indicators, emphasizing humanitarian issues, ceasefire efforts, and non-elite voices, despite demonizing Israel and advocating for Gaza. Both agencies showed shifts toward peace journalism following a truce, with AP maintaining a mostly neutral tone and QNA adopting a more sympathetic tone toward Gaza. The findings highlight how geopolitical and cultural proximity influence news framing and suggest that neutrality in headlines may coincide with war journalism's episodic and zero-sum framing.
