Abstract
"Exit, Voice, and Solidarity: Contesting Precarity in the US and European Telecommunications Industries" by Virginia Doellgast explores the factors that influence employers' choices between high-road and low-road strategies in industrial relations and human resource management. The book focuses on the telecommunications sector and examines the impact of national institutional structures on job security, downsizing, performance management, and union responses. Through empirical research and case studies from 10 countries, Doellgast demonstrates that the nature and effect of precarious work are influenced by the ability of employers to exit workplace protections, the presence of worker voice opportunities, and the extent of union solidarity. The book highlights the dynamic interactions between employers, institutions, and labor actors and emphasizes the role of union strategy in extending workplace protections to precarious workers.
