Abstract

This article focuses on the emotional labor involved in the role of chief executive officers (CEOs), highlighting the intense emotional demands they face as the public representatives of their organizations. It outlines how CEOs must project confidence, manage crises, engage with politically charged social issues, and balance authenticity with vulnerability, all while absorbing criticism and emotional distress from various stakeholders. The article identifies recent challenges increasing this emotional labor, such as ongoing global crises, heightened expectations for CEO activism, and the demand for personal openness. To cope, it recommends four strategies for CEOs: relying on trusted confidants outside the organization, listening to professional advisors while maintaining control, recognizing that criticism is directed at the organization rather than themselves personally, and anticipating the emotional reactions of others.
