Abstract

The article focuses on how BlackBerry’s 2010 acquisition of QNX, a real-time, safety-critical operating system, transformed the company from a declining smartphone maker into a leader in software for automotive, rail, industrial, and embedded systems. QNX’s microkernel architecture supports high-assurance safety and cybersecurity standards, enabling its use in over 255 million vehicles worldwide and expanding into sectors like rail transit and medical devices. India is highlighted as a strategic hub for software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and safety-critical software development, with significant contributions from local developers and partnerships in education to build embedded engineering talent. The article underscores QNX’s role as a foundational platform driving the shift from hardware to complex software systems in critical industries.
