Abstract
The article focuses on Julia Garnett, a 17-year-old free speech activist from Hendersonville, Tennessee, recognized by First Lady Jill Biden for her leadership against book banning. Garnett, a member of the National Coalition Against Censorship's (NCAC) Student Advocates for Speech (SAS) initiative, has advocated for student representation on book review committees and testified before Congress on book bans. Her activism is informed by her experiences as a queer student seeking inclusive representation in school libraries. Garnett was among 15 young women honored by the White House Gender Policy Council during the "Girls Leading Change" ceremony on the International Day of the Girl, and she encourages other youth to persist in defending free speech and combating censorship.
