Abstract

This article discusses the global expansion of the children's television series Sesame Street. The series was created in the United States in 1969 with the goal of preparing preschool-aged children for formal education, particularly those who were disadvantaged by racial and class inequities. The organization behind Sesame Street, Children's Television Workshop (CTW), sought to sell the series internationally while avoiding the perception of cultural imperialism. However, CTW faced challenges in Western Europe, where broadcasters had different ideas about appropriate children's programming.
