Abstract

The article focuses on the longstanding conflict between conservative activists and CBS News, highlighting historical and recent efforts by conservatives to influence or criticize the network. CBS, once labeled the "Communist Broadcasting System" by conservatives for its critical coverage of figures like Senator Joseph McCarthy, has faced decades of accusations of liberal bias, including organized campaigns by groups such as the John Birch Society and Accuracy in Media (AIM). In the 1960s, conservative businessman David W. Dye attempted a proxy takeover of CBS to shift its editorial stance, reflecting broader conservative dissatisfaction with the network's news and entertainment content. While CBS remains influential, the current media landscape offers conservatives numerous alternative outlets, such as Fox News, reducing the strategic necessity of controlling CBS, though recent moves by the network have reignited concerns about ideological shifts.
