Abstract
This article examines the factors influencing virtual group-watching of Netflix Party, a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform feature, among New Zealanders during the COVID-19 pandemic using the uses and gratifications theory (UGT) and structural equation modelling (SEM). Survey data from 391 respondents revealed that binge-watching, entertainment gratification, social engagement, and social influence significantly motivated group-watching via Netflix Party, while informational purposes did not have a significant effect. The study suggests that SVOD providers should enhance interactive features and privacy assurances to improve user experience and loyalty. Limitations include the non-random sample and focus on New Zealand, indicating caution when generalizing findings to other populations or platforms.
