Abstract

The article focuses on the concept of conflict intelligence (CIQ) as a critical leadership competency for managing rising workplace incivility and polarization. Conflict intelligence encompasses self-awareness, social-conflict skills, situational adaptivity, and systemic wisdom, enabling leaders to navigate disputes effectively and foster organizational cultures marked by trust, creativity, and psychological safety. Drawing on examples from diplomats, peacemakers, and business executives, the article outlines seven strategies—such as laying groundwork for communication, building rapport, balancing discipline with creativity, and leveraging broader contexts—that leaders use to transform conflict into opportunities for long-term organizational success. It emphasizes that developing conflict intelligence throughout an organization is essential for thriving amid increasing social and workplace tensions.
