Exploring disclaimers on Chinese social networking sites from a metapragmatic perspective.

Abstract
This study investigates the use of disclaimers as metapragmatic devices in online interpersonal interactions on the Chinese social networking site Weibo. It identifies three types of disclaimers—meta-negation disclaimers, meta-prohibition disclaimers, and a newly established category called meta-condition disclaimers—each with distinct syntactic structures and communicative functions such as mitigating face-threatening acts or justifying critical remarks. The research further categorizes disclaimers as prospective, retrospective, or conjunctive moves, with the latter newly proposed to describe disclaimers that link ongoing communicative behaviors. Predominantly, Chinese internet users employ disclaimers to convey criticism, reflecting underlying cultural values rooted in Confucian principles such as ren (kindheartedness), yi (righteousness), and li (politeness), thereby offering insights into online rapport management within Chinese digital communication.
