Abstract
This article focuses on the experiences and needs of adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and restricted or repetitive behaviors. It highlights that adults with ASD face diverse challenges including social isolation, employment barriers, health disparities, and limited access to appropriate housing and support services, while also possessing unique strengths such as attention to detail and specialized expertise. The article emphasizes the importance of individualized approaches to diagnosis and care, the critical need for comprehensive transition planning from adolescence to adulthood, and the significant role of family and non-family caregivers amid systemic service gaps. Additionally, it discusses mental health considerations and pharmacological treatments for co-occurring conditions, advocating for increased funding, policy development, and neurodiversity-affirming perspectives to improve quality of life for autistic adults.
