Abstract

The article focuses on a qualitative study conducted by researchers at Duquesne University that examines how college students construct their alcohol-related content (ARC) identities on social media. Utilizing social norms theory and symbolic interactionism, the study involved in-depth interviews with 20 college students who engage in drinking and ARC posting. Thematic analysis revealed two main themes: alcohol as a focal point, with subthemes including partier and humorist identities, and alcohol as an accessory, with subthemes such as social/outgoing and sophisticated identities. The research suggests that understanding these ARC identities could help identify harmful drinking patterns and inform intervention strategies for at-risk college students.
