Abstract
This article examines the transformation of American journalism's commercial critique through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, focusing on how the New York Times (NYT) has uniquely managed the market's heteronomous pressures amid a technology-driven collapse in advertising revenue. It highlights the NYT's strategic adaptation by shifting from advertiser dependence to reader subscriptions, leveraging technological innovation, political polarization, and a distinctive dual-class ownership structure to sustain economic and symbolic dominance. The author characterizes the contemporary journalistic field as an "inverted pyramid," where the NYT's success deepens hierarchical divides while enabling it to challenge traditional journalistic norms from a position of strength. This analysis underscores the evolving interplay between economic forces and journalistic autonomy, raising questions about the future integration and stability of the journalistic field in the United States.
