Abstract
This study investigates the impact of photos on comprehension and recall of news content on Arabic news websites, using the dual-coding theory as its theoretical framework. An experimental design involving 80 Arabic-speaking university students compared two versions of a news website—one with photos and one without—across nine varied news stories. Results showed that the inclusion of photos significantly improved both comprehension and recall among participants. The findings suggest that combining visual and verbal information enhances cognitive processing and memory retention of online news, offering practical implications for Arabic news website designers. Limitations include the sample's narrow demographic and focus on photos alone, with recommendations for future research to explore other visual elements and interactive graphics.
