Abstract

This article presents a qualitative multiple-case study examining the reading practices of newspaper journalists in Uruguay, conceptualizing journalists as a community of practice and reading as a disciplinary literacy activity. Through verbal reading protocols with six journalists from diverse media outlets and political orientations, the study identifies shared comprehension, monitoring, and evaluation strategies used to construct broad event scenarios, critically scrutinize texts based on prior knowledge, and assess textual characteristics—especially when reading peers' work. The findings suggest these reading practices reflect features of Western journalism culture and professional expertise, highlighting the importance of integrating reading as a critical component in journalism education. The study acknowledges its limited sample size and calls for further ethnographic and comparative research to deepen understanding of journalists' literacy practices across contexts.
