Abstract

This article examines the comparative impact of two organization development (OD) interventions—Team Building (TB) and Appreciative Inquiry (AI)—on group effectiveness within a research and development (R&D) organization in India. Using a controlled experimental design with 90 scientists randomly assigned to AI, TB, or control groups, the study assessed effects on group communication, group decision-making, group membership satisfaction, and group performance. Results indicated that both AI and TB interventions significantly improved group communication, decision-making, and performance compared to the control, but only AI significantly enhanced group membership satisfaction. The findings suggest that AI, a strengths-based, positive psychology approach, is more effective in addressing human process variables, while TB, a problem-solving intervention, better supports task-oriented outcomes; thus, both interventions are complementary for fostering team effectiveness in organizational settings.
