Abstract
This article focuses on the intersection of data journalism and journalism education, presenting a scoping review of 41 studies published between 2013 and 2023. It identifies five main challenges to integrating data journalism into journalism curricula: a shortage of technically skilled educators, limited resources, lack of concrete methodological approaches, difficulties in curriculum development, and resistance to incorporating mathematics into journalism programs. The review highlights that while data journalism skills are quantitatively oriented, most research employs qualitative methods, and that scholarship is concentrated mainly in Europe and North America. It calls for increased funding, capacity building, and further research—particularly on accreditation bodies and underrepresented regions such as Africa and South America—to support the effective incorporation of data-driven approaches in journalism education.
