Abstract
The article discusses a study examining the effectiveness of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) protocol in teaching spontaneous communication skills to individuals with moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Conducted at Eskisehir Osmangazi Universitesi, the research involved three boys diagnosed with moderate/severe ASD and utilized a single-subject research model. The study found that the first three phases of the PECS protocol significantly improved the children's ability to request food, with skills maintained and generalized across different settings and individuals. The findings align with existing literature on PECS and suggest implications for future research and practice in the field of autism communication strategies. [Extracted from the article]
