Abstract

This article investigates the perceptions of Uitenhage residents in South Africa regarding the print media's portrayal of gender-based violence (GBV) against women and children, and explores the relationship between exposure to print media and violent behavior. Using quantitative methods, the study found that while print media is perceived to portray GBV in both positive and negative ways, many respondents believe it often reinforces traditional gender roles and stereotypes that may normalize violence against women. Although some participants acknowledged a link between media exposure and violent behavior, the study emphasizes that multiple other factors contribute to such behavior. The authors recommend responsible print media reporting to mitigate GBV and contribute to societal change.
