Abstract

This article systematically reviews the prevalence and utilization of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) among active duty military personnel and veterans globally. Based on 27 studies, primarily from the United States, CIM use is common in these populations, with therapies such as chiropractic care, massage, mindfulness/meditation, and acupuncture frequently employed. Dietary supplements, especially multivitamins, minerals, and protein/amino acid supplements, are also widely used. The review highlights demographic and health-related factors influencing CIM use and underscores the need for further research on integrating CIM into military health systems, particularly outside the U.S., to address complex physical and mental health needs in military and veteran populations.
