Abstract
This article focuses on the neuroanatomical basis of the traditional acupuncture point ST36, located on the anterior leg and widely used in clinical practice. It proposes that the deep peroneal nerve (DPN) underlies ST36, supported by evidence including patient-reported spreading sensations along the DPN's path during needling, anatomical relationships with the tibialis anterior muscle, and physiological effects such as analgesia and anti-inflammatory responses linked to DPN stimulation. The article highlights challenges in precisely locating ST36 due to anatomical variability and suggests using patient feedback and ultrasonography to determine appropriate needle insertion depth, which ranges from approximately 2.58 to 3.26 cm. These findings aim to enhance the accuracy and potential therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture at ST36.
