Abstract
This article focuses on recent research from Shandong University in China examining the therapeutic potential of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and natural products for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The study reviews preclinical evidence on how specific TCM formulas may improve ADHD-like behaviors through mechanisms such as modulation of catecholamine neurotransmission, enhancement of neurodevelopment and synaptic plasticity, reduction of neuroinflammation, and regulation of the gut-brain axis. It also addresses current limitations in the research, including reliance on single animal models and limited pharmacokinetic data, and suggests directions for future investigation into natural product-derived ADHD treatments.
