The power of berries against cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract

This article focuses on the potential cardiovascular benefits of berries, emphasizing their rich content of polyphenols—bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may help prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Berries contain various nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, stilbenes (notably resveratrol), and flavonoids, which have been shown in animal, epidemiological, and clinical studies to improve vascular function, reduce oxidative stress, modulate inflammation, and favorably influence blood lipids and blood pressure. Despite promising findings, the article highlights limitations in current research, including variability in polyphenol bioavailability, small sample sizes, short intervention durations, and inconsistent results, underscoring the need for well-designed, long-term human studies to clarify the mechanisms and efficacy of berry polyphenols in CVD prevention and treatment.
