Abstract
This nrief study examines the historical and medicinal significance of the ash tree (Fraximus excelsio) in Irish traditional medicine, focusing on its use in treating rheumatism. drawing from the Nationa; Folklore School's Collection (NFCS), the research documents twenty-eight specific records detailing therapeutic preparation methods and demonstrates how modern scientific research validates these traditional applications. Recent research has shown how the leaves, fruits and seeds of the ash tree possess antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and cytotoxic effects -- a striking instance of reverse pharmacology, where traditional knowledge guides modern therapeutic discoveries.
